An interview with Ulprec from the amazing children’s book The Anteater King!

These two brave companions must navigate the treacherous jungle and overcome countless obstacles to save their world from certain doom.

anteater king

You want to take advantage of this thrilling adventure of courage, determination, and friendship. Join them on their harrowing quest as they fight for their survival and the future of their beloved home.

This exciting story is recommended for readers aged 10 and above.

Welcome to the protagonist interview for Book Buddies!

What is your full name?

Ulprec.

What is your background? What makes Ulprec you?

I’m… not sure what makes me me; perhaps my tail, my ears? Hmmm… I live with my friend Sombra, a large female tuxedo cat, with her human caretaker Celia, an only child like me, and her parents. I am VERY talkative, as you’ll probably notice. Sombra does not talk at all, and I never mind having a lengthy, one-sided conversation.

It sounds like you could be a talkative mouse. Do you talk yourself into or out of danger?

I like to think I have a nose for staying out of unnecessary trouble. I may not be much, but I would do anything for the ones who show me love and compassion.

Where do you live?

A small village in South America, which is being destroyed by an unknown, malevolent force called La Quema.

What is La Quema? It sounds really scary. Should I be scared?

It is hard to explain. It is a big fire that has a mind. The fires start from nowhere, and out of these fires come men, or creatures that imitate the forms of men, that are made out of total darkness.

I was right. I should be scared! If you looked in a mirror, would you like what you saw?

I’m not sure what a mirror is, sorry. I guess it would depend on what was in it. If this ‘mirror’ were full of cheese and berries, I would like seeing that. Celia gives me these little berries that turn my little fingers purple. This is sort of making me hungry.

What are your likes/dislikes?

LIKES: I was going to say something else, but now I’m thinking about cheese and berries, so we’ll just begin with that. Other than that, passing the days aimlessly with six-year-old Celia and the elegant Sombra.

DISLIKES: Snakes and birds are bad news. Being alone is no fun. But most of all, I don’t like to see others in pain.

What would be your biggest wish/desire?

For things to return to the way they were in a time before La Quema’s fiery, unforgiving wrath. Life was perfect.

Who are your parents? Are they still alive?

There are no other of my kind in my life. I don’t remember my parents, nor if I had any siblings. I have no mate and no offspring of my own. I don’t know how I came to live with the human Celia and her parents in their modest home. The feelings of aloneness are what make me cling so devotedly to the few creatures I am lucky enough to have in my life, and those I am destined to meet along the way.

What would you change about yourself if you could wave a magic wand?

I wish I was brave, beautiful, and able to handle myself in a fight like my dearest friend Sombra. She is literally perfect; so soft and pretty, so sure of herself, so fast and strong, she fears nothing.

What do you think about the current news in your area?

It is beyond horrible. Large fires are burning the jungle and entire villages. I’m afraid my village will be next. Everyone and everything is suffering. No one knows why all of this is happening, and it is terrifying.

How honest are you about your thoughts and feelings?

Overly honest, and totally unafraid to let others know what I am feeling and thinking. If talking was a superpower, I would be the mightiest hero in the whole world!

Who is the person you despise the most?

I don’t hate anyone. I only know one person, and that’s Celia. She is wonderful to me.

Not even her parents?

I am familiar with the sight of her parents, and I don't think they'd be too happy if they saw me scurrying around their house, but I don’t hate them. As I said, I don’t hate anyone.

Can you save Celia from La Quema?

I wish I could save her, but I am so very small.

If you knew you were going to die in 24 hours, name three things you would do in the time you had left.

First, I’d let the ones I care about know how much I love them. Second, snuggle in Sombra’s soft, black fur one last time. Third, eat my last meal out of little Celia’s hand.

An excerpt from The Anteater King

Ulprec was familiarly accustomed to the one-sidedness of his relationship with his large feline friend, which made those ‘once in a blue moon’ morsels of her attention so welcome and captivating.

As Ulprec lay upon his back, drawing and releasing exhausted breaths, his tiny eyes retracted from the pains in his delicate limbs, Sombra calmly approached and began licking the mouse’s injuries.

After a few dozen lathers of warm feline saliva, Ulprec felt the dull ache in his feet melt away somehow: like a mother’s kiss upon the injury of her distressed child. Pain departed and comfort ensued in the mouse as he lay there upon the jungle floor.

‘What ever would I do without you around, dearest Sombra?’ Ulprec thought to himself.

Sombra stood tall again, circled a few steps around to the opposite side of her companion and proceeded to curl her soft body around him. There had never been a hole in the wall, nor a nook close to the roof of his old home whose warmth could compare to that of the dark fur and flesh over the oversized tuxedo cat. Its coziness and security were that of a mother’s womb.

As helpless and exhausted as he was, Ulprec felt as though nothing could hurt him as he rested. Not the jungle, nor its inhabitants, not the fires of La Quema itself… nothing.

Insights on Writing the First Draft.

Insights on Writing Fiction the First Draft

Writing fiction is like taking a magical journey, much like the path you walk when walking the dog--make sure you look where you're stepping!

On a lighter note, you get to create whole new worlds, give birth to characters, and spin yarns that captivate readers and transport them to new realms of imagination. It’s like playing God but with a pen instead of a lightning bolt.

For most authors, writing fiction starts with a “Eureka!” moment. From this tiny spark, a story blooms, taking shape through hours of brainstorming, exploration, and the occasional bottle of wine. Each author has their own unique approach to the creative process, drawing from personal experiences, observations, and the vast tapestry of human emotions to breathe life into their characters and worlds.

In addition to creating memorable characters, authors must master the art of storytelling. It’s like baking a cake, but instead of sugar and flour, you use plot, pacing, and narrative arc to create a delicious literary treat. The journey of a well-told story is a rollercoaster of emotions and revelations, like riding a unicorn through a rainbow.

Of course, the path to writing fiction has its challenges. But through perseverance and dedication, authors overcome these obstacles, trusting in their creative instincts and embracing the process of exploration and experimentation. Many authors find solace and inspiration in the rituals and routines that shape their writing practice, like drinking coffee, taking a walk, or yelling at their significant other dog.

Writing fiction is no joke, but the journey can be a lot more fun than you'd expect. Forget about the lone writer typing away in a dimly lit room - authors need feedback, support, and a good laugh to stay sane. That's why they turn to beta readers, editors, and fellow writers, who help them polish their prose, develop realistic characters, and prevent them from going completely bonkers. So, if you want to be a writer, remember this: you're not alone, and you're not crazy - well, not completely.

The art of writing fiction is like a roller coaster ride - it's exhilarating, unpredictable, and can make you feel a little queasy at times. But hey, that's all part of the fun!

Aspiring writers, prepare yourselves for a wild ride filled with plot twists, character development, and the occasional existential crisis. So buckle up, grab a snack, and let's see where this literary journey takes us!

Louise Wise also writes under the pen name T E Kessler.

* Example of answering several questions as one:

Are you easily angered?

Do you easily fall in love?

Do you have any regrets in life?

Which person in your family (or friends) are you the closest to?

I totally lost it and got super annoyed with myself when I fell for my bestie. I didn't just fall for her easily, it took me four whole years to realise my feelings! But when I finally worked up the courage to tell her how I felt, I messed up and tried to hook up with her, which really hurt her feelings. That's my biggest regret because she's my closest friend.

Enjoy!

How far would you go to stay alive? Before you judge, read her story in Eden.

Eden

by
Louise Wise

Snippet from Chapter Three

There was no more shouting. All was quiet and peaceful. Jenny opened her eyes, and as awareness caught up, she flipped to her side and looked to the top. With dread, she rose and scrambled to the summit. It felt like a mountain.

Expecting to find Bodie and Matt dead, their bodies ripped in a frenzy under the clawed hands of the alien, she was relieved to see the men and the buggies were gone.

A glint of sunlight reflecting on something in the sky caught her eye. The buggies, now small space shuttles, were journeying back to Taurus as if being hauled back up by an invisible string.

Jenny climbed into her buggy. With shaking hands, she pressed the controls; nothing happened. She spoke into the transmitter but remembered that Kate was malfunctioning.

Her buggy was utterly immobilised.

‘Shit,’ she said or tried to say. Instead, her voice was nothing but a rasp. It felt sore, but ignoring it, she pressed more buttons on the screen display. She pumped the accelerator, but nothing happened. She couldn’t even close the buggy; instead, it remained open-topped.

She climbed back out, her hands on her head as panic held her in its grip. She looked at the sky and saw a glint of light reflecting off one of the buggies.

It’s OK. It’s OK. It’s OK. Breathe, Jenny, breathe.

She touched her throat. It was so sore, and she suspected she had alien finger marks around her throat. But she had a bigger problem in the shape of a huge alien creature with clawed, humanlike hands. She glanced around her. There was no sign of it. Surely it would’ve returned to ensure she was dead after chasing off the men.

Unless it’d gained access to one of the buggies and was heading towards Taurus.

The thought was unwelcome and quickly dismissed. Kate was programmed to destroy an intruder immediately.

But she wasn’t working.

She closed her eyes briefly. She couldn’t think that way. The alien’s body would be cast out into space when it tried to gain entry.

She climbed back inside the buggy. She’d be OK. Bodie or Matt would realise she’d been left behind. One of them would override Kate to get her vehicle operational. She’d wait.

She looked upward at the now empty blue sky.

Won’t be long now, she thought.

Around her, all she could hear was the pounding of her heart. It was a lonely sound. She sat for a long time with her head tilted back, looking up at the sky’s vastness and emptiness.

But did you know there was a book two?
