How To… Write A Sequel

BY

Catherine Fearns

When I was writing my first novel, Reprobation, I envisaged it as a self-contained entity. I didn’t think I’d even get a publishing deal, never mind the opportunity to write more books! But at some point, I began to imagine the characters’ journeys continuing past the end of the story. I realised that the adventure was just beginning, and I was not ready to let go of the world I had created. Consuming Fire came knocking on the door before I’d even finished writing Reprobation.

Writing a sequel is a wonderful opportunity, but it comes with a whole new set of constraints, dilemmas and technical challenges that the author doesn’t have to face with a stand-alone. This is what I have learned so far about that tricky second book:

Crime fiction is made for sequels

Crime fiction lends itself to sequels and series more than most other literary genres. In fact, I can’t even think of that many stand-alone detective thrillers or police procedurals. Detectives work case by case; an investigation follows a process, a formula, which can be repeated ad infinitum. And since the character of the detective tends to take second place to that of the plot, there’s not enough scope within one book to develop him or her fully.

…. but do it for the right reasons

Sequels are notoriously weaker than their predecessors. Think about all the disappointing Hollywood movie franchises. Don’t do it to cash in (ha, not much chance of that for an indie author!), or because you think it will be easy to churn something similar out (it won’t, it will be harder). Do it because you have a story that needs to be told.

Identify your USP, and work it

What was special about your last book? Reprobation was a crime thriller with a slight supernatural twist. the reader can take the police’s practical explanation for the crimes, or he/she can wonder whether there might have been other forces at work. I wanted to develop this idea of the unknowable, of the hidden world beyond our own, and I wanted to watch DI Darren Swift’s gradual journey towards an acceptance of the occult.

…. but change things up too

At the same time, nobody needs to read two books in a row about windswept Merseyside beaches, abandoned churches and grumpy nuns. I certainly didn’t want to write Reprobation again! Consuming Fire picks up Reprobation’s characters and themes but has a complete change of mood; from a cold gothic winter to a fiery Scouse summer. It also brings in a brand new villain and a new literary technique.

It's not just your book anymore

It’s heart-warming and hard to believe, but I actually have some loyal readers now, who are looking forward to my next book! And they will certainly have expectations. I’m terrified of disappointing them, and I do need to keep them in mind and understand what it is they liked about Reprobation.

…but you have to follow your own path

People love the characters of Helen and Mikko. I do too! But they had a lot of time to shine in Reprobation, and writing a Helen-and-Mikko follow-up love story is not what I’m about. They need a rest. It’s too easy otherwise. Darren Swift is my detective, and he is on a character arc. He needs times and pages to develop, for the reader to fall in love with him. Helen features prominently in Consuming Fire too, as she and Darren begin to form an unusual investigative team. But don’t worry, Mikko will make a big comeback in the third book!

You know what you’re doing. Or do you? Keep that beginner’s mind.

You’re a published author now, so that means you’re an expert, right? You don’t need any more help or advice, right? Wrong! You know nothing, Jon Snow. Especially about writing sequels. Keep learning, always. Keep asking questions, worship your beta readers, your editors, your experts. And check your facts. Re-read the first book over and over, because sequels risk being riddled with continuity errors, and readers SPOT these things.

... but don’t be afraid to experiment

People bought and liked your first book, so you must be doing something right. Debut authors can be understandably tentative with their style and plot, so now that you’ve established yourself, it’s time to spread your wings a little. Consuming Fire uses the technique of a ‘book within a book’ – a seventeenth century found text which I had enormous fun writing and interspersing with the main narrative. I wouldn’t have had the confidence to do that first time round. And I hope people love it.

The book needs to work as a standalone too

Marketing is easier now; you’ve got a bigger social media following than you had before; you might even have an agent or publisher where you didn’t first time round. So your second book will reach a wider audience. But the problem is – some of them didn’t read your first book. They won’t know what the hell is going on! You need to view your sequel as a new story within the scope of a larger story. You need to re-introduce some facts and character traits, to situate the new reader and jog the existing reader’s memory.

...but don’t put in spoilers

The huge challenge is to make the sequel work as a standalone without being tedious or clumsy, and crucially, without putting in spoilers. Some people might read your new book and think, ‘wow, this is great, I’ll go back and read the first one!’ But not if you tell them whodunnit!

So that’s what I’ve learned about sequels. I’m currently writing book three, trying to catch up with my characters who have now taken on lives of their own. I can’t keep up with them…

INTRODUCING…

Consuming Fire

What Has Been Seen Cannot Be Unseen…

Liverpool is in the grip of an intense heatwave, and strange things are happening.

Purchase Link
A woman dies in an apparent case of Spontaneous Human Combustion; a truck explodes on the dock road; the charred corpses of pets litter the city; forest fires ravage the pinewoods…and there are birds everywhere, silent flocks drawing in ominously.

Detective Inspector Darren Swift thinks there are connections, and his investigation delves into the worlds of football, nightclubs and organised crime. But is he imagining things?

Dr. Helen Hope doesn’t think so. And she believes the key lies in a mysterious seventeenth-century occult book which has gone missing from Liverpool Library.

In the blistering sequel to Reprobation, DI Swift is forced to confront some inconvenient ghosts from his past, as a terrifying shadow lies over his city’s reality…

An interview with Diane Demetre discussing Island of Secrets and the writing process in general.

Does writing energize or exhaust you?

Writing always energizes and inspires me. It’s a soul connection and conduit to my creativity.

Why did you write Island of Secrets?

I remember when the idea for this book came to me. My husband and I were out in our boat on the Broadwater on the Gold Coast in Australia. It was one of those magnificent boating days—calm, sultry and cloudless. Having just completed Retribution, I’d been waiting on the inspiration for my next book. Nothing yet had beamed in. As someone who is willing to wait for inspiration rather than forcing my creativity, I was enjoying a couple weeks off from my writing schedule.

While we were relaxing on the Broadwater and lapping up the beautiful weather, an old Huon pine cruiser drove past us. Like a bolt out of the blue, Island of Secrets landed in my consciousness. The story arrived well-formed, with characters I immediately visualized.

I’d visited Hawaii a couple of years earlier, and Maui, with its volcanic geography, lush vegetation and captivating sea life lived up to its name of the Magic Isle. It was the ideal location for Island of Secrets.

What is Island of Secrets about?
In the vein of Iona Grey and Nicholas Sparks, Island of Secrets is a contemporary multi-generational love story which transcends time and speaks to the profounder meaning of love, loss and belonging. Island of Secrets is romantic women’s mystery with the narrative woven across two time-lines—1973 and 2017. It is written in third person and told from the heroine’s POV through each timeline.

Give me the first, middle and end line from Island of Secrets.

FIRST LINE - For a day that had started out so right, she had no idea how it went so horribly wrong.

MIDDLE LINE - In contrast to the solemn reason for her visit, the magical mosaic of color tinged everything with its vibrancy.

END LINE - At last, everyone had found their home, their happy place.

Does (and how) your protagonist change/learn by the end of the book?

Though the story is told in two parts and from two female protagonist’s point of view, both women are transformed firstly, by self-love and then love for another person.

Is there an underlying theme to Island of Secrets?

At its heart, Island of Secrets examines the lives of not just Cecilia and Tina, but all the empowered women—Leilani, Victoria, Beatrice, Loretta, Silly Suzie et al. Women from different times and cultures who face similar challenges and find the courage and strength to overcome them. It is an exploration of how we view the fundamentals of life. Is it love or money that motivates us? Where does loyalty lie in the equation? What moves us to make the decisions we do? And no matter the dilemma we face, there comes a time when we must acknowledge that love is the ultimate answer.

Would you have the main character as a best friend?

I would have both Cecilia and Tina as close friends. Both women are strong, independent, kind and intelligent.

What’s the best/saddest/funniest/shocking one-liner from Island of Secrets?

Harbor Island V listed in the ocean in the same way she did, alone and unmanned.

Is there a dedication?

Yes… the dedication is to all the readers who believe in the power of love. This book is more than a story about romance, it is about the how love can transcend time and space.

Can you share a few lines from your best review of Island of Secrets?

If you like fast-paced thrillers, check out THE FAILSAFE QUERY. Author, Michael Jenkins, is revealing all about his main character from the book. @rararesources #political #thriller #booktour #author #givaway #win @FailsafeQuery

The Failsafe Query
The Failsafe Query is a gripping thriller set in the contemporary world of modern British espionage.
Sean Richardson, a disgraced former intelligence agent, is tasked to lead a team to search for Alfie Chapman, an Intelligence officer on the cusp of exposing thousands of secrets to the media. This includes a long lost list of Russian moles embedded since the Cold War, one of whom remains a public favourite in the British parliamentary system.

The action moves with absorbing pace and intrigue across Central Asia and Europe as the puzzle begins to unfold through a deep hidden legacy.

Tense, fast paced, and insightful, The Failsafe Query twists and turns to a satisfyingly dramatic finale.

The theme on WWBB is all devoted to the character, and today Michael Jenkins discusses his character Sean Richardson from The Failsafe Query

The main character, Sean, is a complex individual forged from his many life experiences - his traumas, his loves, his loyalty, and his sense of duty – even if he has to kill. The complexity of his character shows his empathetic side, but equally, he is able to switch to a ruthless side to get the job done. He thinks a lot. He considers his options. His wisdom and experiences tell him ‘this is the right thing to do’ - but on occasion, his risk-taking side tells him he should bend the rules and go beyond the established boundaries to achieve his aims.

Sean grew up with a tough father, worked on building sites and frequented tough east London pubs, before being groomed for a career in military intelligence. His chosen career was successful, but as the years passed by, he found himself more and more involved in the dark arts of espionage. Sucked into the killing, the denial operations, and having a number of enemies always on his tail. Then he crashed and burned.

Sean is often conflicted, often a dreamer – having his own desires which were often in reach, only to be snatched away at the last moment. Such experiences and traumas have made him a cautious but driven man, a survivor against all the odds. Unsure of his own destiny, he knows he has left death and destruction in his way, but always feels he has done the right thing for his service to crown and country. But that loyalty is forever being tested by the duplicity he uncovers within central government and the seditious nature of many of the officers and departments he had to serve. The more he uncovers, the more he has a sense of betrayal – to himself and his nation - but how far can he continue in his chosen career he never really knows. He feels trapped. Trapped by the adrenalin, the adventure, the sense of making a difference. He is everything that real counter-terrorist and intelligence officers deal with – he is often gentle and kind, polite and understanding – but equally, he has a brutal side for those who have betrayed him, or where violence is needed to achieve the aim.

Sean is based on three individuals I had the honour to serve with – each of them had very specific characteristics and behaviours, and I blended those into Sean to make him the complex operator he is. Charismatic, gregarious, honourable, a killer, a smart operator, wise and sharp, but often conflicted with his inner turmoil and the trauma he carries – those traumas, he places in a drawer, and only allows each of those drawers to open if absolutely needed – when he is deep in thought. His way of coping is to generally keep them all closed.

Sean is a lover of risk, but also a man of culture – he loves painting and is an accomplished artist. He loves to travel and the cultures of the countries he visits. He likes solitude, but equally, he relishes the time he has with his mates whether at work or having a few beers with them.

His hidden desire is for a simple, quiet life with a loving wife and children. But circumstances collide against him time and time again. Now he is trying to find a future and a way to his dreams. His friend can see he’ll make it – somehow and someway, and they’ll always be there backing him when the chips are down, and he thinks he has failed. They see him as human. Wise, respectful, tough, full of fortitude and vigour – and above all else loyal to the people he trusts. They will follow him anywhere as their leader.

There is much more to come from Sean, and while his backstory has been partially told in the novel, there is much more to him than meets the eye, as there is with any friend you begin to learn about over time.

A romcom novel full of spells, desire and a hot detective by @TichaB #witches #romcom #chicklit

Blind Magic

by

Natalina Reis

Will her promise to heal the man who’s captured her heart put him in danger? In Natalina Reis’s whimsical novel of spells, desire, and unwavering determination, a hot detective with a painful past and an impulsive witch armed with potent tea are linked by an instant connection and the promise of a magical love affair.

Marcy has never been in love. But when Oliver Dawson walks into her store, she falls head over heels. Unable to shake the feeling that she and Oliver were made for each other, for the first time in her life, the quirky witch considers casting a love spell for herself.
Oliver’s life is turned upside down when he’s shot and almost killed. Even though events haven’t been kind to the sexy police detective, he’s determined to make the best of his situation. But still, nothing could have prepared him for feisty Marcy breaking down his defenses, nor the healing tea that leaves him gagging.

Unconventional and hell-bent on getting her man, the little witch soon weaves her magic and captures his heart. He’s more than willing to give it to her, but when faced with his painful and turbulent past, neither are sure they’ll get their happily ever after.

Excerpts from
Blind Magic

I swallowed a ball of anxiety and searched for the right words. “I’m pretty short—”

Oliver interrupted me. “I know that. Probably about five two?” I nodded, ignoring the fact he couldn’t see me. “I want real descriptions; colors and feelings. Your own rain forest.”

I groaned. “My own rain forest indeed.” I sighed and fell silent for a few seconds. “You know my hair is red and curly. What you may not realize is that I have a head full of messy, frizzy curls that refuse to be tamed. That’s why I normally wear my hair up in a bun or a loose braid like tonight.” Turning around to face him, I brought his hand, still in mine, up to my hair, lying to one side of my face. “I like bows. A lot! Some say a bit too much. Celia often says I look like a birthday gift begging to be opened.” He opened his mouth to say something. “Don’t say it! Don’t even think it.” But I was thinking about him unwrapping me with those hands of his and…. I shook my head. “You’re distracting me.”

“In a good way, right?” His hand playing with my hair was definitely distracting.

I ignored him. Kind of. “I wear big, funky glasses because I am waiting to win the lottery to have corrective surgery. But I do like my glasses a lot.”

“They add to your personality,” he suggested helpfully.

His hand had slid to my cheek. I automatically leaned into it. “My skin is your typical redhead skin; alabaster with a spatter of freckles across my nose and cheekbones—not many, which is surprising for a red like me.” The heat of his palm spread from my cheek to my neck and parts beyond. He had scooted up to me and his body was now so close I could feel his heat. “I have a tiny nose—not very handy for glasses—and my eyes take over my face; round and big like smoky blue marbles.”

“And your lips?” Oliver’s voice was low and husky, thick with undisguised desire. His fingers skirted the contours of my lips, taking my breath away.

“I have been blessed—or cursed—with naturally red lips.” My voice caught in my throat as his fingers touched the corner of my mouth. “You know the rest….”

“Not well enough yet.” He leaned over to me and I met him halfway.

Our mouths fit together like two pieces of a puzzle, his tongue teasing my lips apart and caressing mine. My insides burst into flames, and so did my face and my ears. I moaned into his mouth and he replied in kind as his hands slid over and around my shoulders to cradle the back of my head. I felt his fingers play with the rubber band of my braid, coaxing it out until my hair fell free of its constraints.

Oliver pulled away from me slightly and began pulling my braid apart, my wild curls flying every which way around my face. “This is why I never wear it down.” I was surprised I could still talk. Oliver’s kiss seemed to have some strange power over my usually high-functioning vocal chords. “It flies all over my face.”

His amazing blue eyes looked straight into my soul as he grasped some of my curls in his hand and brought them to his nose. “You smell like sunshine and flowers.” The lava inside of me bubbled up and melted everything in its way. Still holding my hair, he buried his lips on my neck behind my ear, and flickered his tongue on my skin. I may have squealed in delight. “I do want to know the rest of you, all of you.”
