* Example of answering several questions as one:

Are you easily angered?

Do you easily fall in love?

Do you have any regrets in life?

Which person in your family (or friends) are you the closest to?

I totally lost it and got super annoyed with myself when I fell for my bestie. I didn't just fall for her easily, it took me four whole years to realise my feelings! But when I finally worked up the courage to tell her how I felt, I messed up and tried to hook up with her, which really hurt her feelings. That's my biggest regret because she's my closest friend.

Enjoy!

Wide Awake Asleep

There's someone for everyone—or so they say. Yet Julie’s ‘the one’ ran off with her best friend.
Julie never forgave either of them, but when she heard they died in tragic circumstances she realised that life was too short for regrets and dived into life making her career ‘the one’.
Except, Fate had other ideas.
Unbeknown to Julie, she’d taken the wrong destiny path and Fate needed to put things right. It sent Julie back to when it started to all go wrong for her… back to 1972 when she was five years old.
One problem.
She had to occupy other people’s bodies and watch her life through their eyes, while trying to stop her former self from making the same wrong decisions.
It was as disconcerting as you could get!

Wide Awake Asleep is currently on a countdown deal. Get it now while it’s only 99p!

Excerpt from Chapter Five Wide Awake Asleep

My head was buzzing; thoughts that weren’t mine invaded my mind. I looked over at the mirror on the dresser, then back at the contents of the bag on the bed. I looked at my hands. I’d noticed they looked different before, but I’d ignored their appearance—had to ignore it, to preserve my sanity.

A stranger’s thoughts persisted in my head. Mundane things of another life that I didn’t belong to.

I looked at the mirror again, then rose and forced my legs to move forwards. I knew I’d look different, but the jolt of shock hit me anyway. Instead of seeing my own face, I saw a young woman with a thin, pockmarked face and awful buck teeth. Instead of my blonde no-nonsense bob, my hair was long and brown. A wave of nausea turned my stomach as I stared at my reflection. I should be seeing a forty-nine-year-old woman in her prime, not a twenty-something scraggy-haired woman. I should be immaculately made up with perfect teeth and skin, not… not this.

An unexpected thought popped into my head. Will I look more professional if I put my hair up or should I leave it down? It wasn’t my thought. It belonged to whoever’s body I was occupying.

One thought was spinning around in my mind—and it was mine: I had died in the crash, and this was some sort of afterlife.

A modern-day Scrooge for all year round! #timetraveler #lovetoread #fantasy #timetravel #novels

When fictional characters move from books to the REAL WORLD.
…from the mind of a fictional character

by

Julie Compton
(a character from Louise Wise's Wide Awake Asleep)

"Julie Compton is already 'current'. She's a highbrow, business woman in joint ownership with an equally highbrow business woman. She's there, dammit. She's made it, despite her disastrous upbringing."

I sit back and admire my narrative that I've said about myself. Well, it's true I did have a disastrous childhood, and I dismiss all this nature V nurture rubbish giving lazy people excuses to sit on their arse and claim benefits from the taxes of hard working people like me.

My dad left when I was about four. It's hard to remember because he kept coming back to secretly visit me--he couldn't give me up, you see, it was only Mum he wanted to divorce. Except I was a constant pawn in her games.

She handed me to social services, and I ended up in care for two years. Those were the worse days of my life. When I came out, I was forced to go back to my mum despite my dad pushing for custody of me.

But look, that's all in the past. I've moved on, and now I have my own back because I've put her in a home now!

I sound smug, and I want to feel smug... except... I'm not. I'm sad that we don't have that mother and daughter bond. It's all too late now, of course. What's happened has happened. No going back, is there?

So, no, I'm not one of those sad individuals on shows like Benefit Street or Can't Pay? We'll Take it Away who constantly bang on about their 'poor me' situations? I've picked myself up, dusted myself down and bloody got on with it!

I started with nothing, and made something of myself... so why do I feel like a part of me is missing? I'm 49 years old, for Christ's sake! I should be settled. But I'm not. Something is missing from my life and I can't think what.

It's all about sex! #books #bookworms #sex #mustread

What is it about sex that sells? Why does my science fiction romance sell more than my 'nice' romances? Is it the sex? The aliens? The idea of dangerous sex? Or just sex in general?

Don't get me wrong, my 'nice' romances do have sex they just don't have that element of dangerous sex or helpless heroines at the mercy of bad men. Instead, they have feisty women and men who haven't a clue what to do with them!

Eden came out ten years ago, and was followed by its sequel Hunted a few years later. In between I've written a romantic comedy with A Proper Charlie and a darker comedy romance with Oh No, I've Fallen in Love. Then this year came, Wide Awake Asleep, which is a time travel romance set in my home town, Northampton.

All, with the exception of Wide Awake Asleep, have sex scenes (A Proper Charlie does bad sex very well!) But Eden and Hunted portrays a vulnerable woman with a potential dangerous man and a will-she-be-raped-or-not situation. They weren't intended to be titillation reads but I can't help to think that this is what entices my audience.

Eden (book 1)   |   Hunted (book 2)

Fly became an unwilling experiment and was dumped on an unknown planet, while Jenny’s ship crashed there.
Two different species.
Two different reasons for being there.
Survive or die?

Is she awake or is she dreaming?
Reality or nightmare?
Julie Compton can’t believe she’s escaped a terrible car crash… it’s impossible, in fact. A tree branch had impaled her to her seat, yet here she was, unharmed and looking down at her crashed car.

What’s a girl to do when she discovers her boss is a wanted man?
Become a honey trap, that's what!

A bitter-sweet story of an ordinary woman stuck in a chick lit novel.
Is it destined for disaster or can the flamboyant characters colour Valeria's otherwise grey world?

If you like #syfy #alien #romance books check out this extract from EDEN

Excerpt from the book
Eden
by
Louise Wise

Dizziness swamped her. Then sunlight fell on her in a burst of fresh, cold air as the door opened. She opened her eyes, and tried to speak but found her voice was nothing but a gurgle, and could only watch, helpless, as Bodie and Matt stared open-mouthed.
They staggered backwards, shouting and swearing, before spinning around and running towards the base of the depression.
Jenny was hurled to the floor. Winded, but managing to crawl outside, she glimpsed Bodie turning to look and calling for her to run. Matt picked up a rock and threw it at the alien as it ran towards them.
She made to stand, but dizziness swamped her again. Trying to ignore the sensation, she staggered away from the spacecraft, but the ground shifted under her feet. Time was measured for Jenny, yet around her things were moving fast.
‘Jen! Move!’ yelled Bodie. The alien was in between her and the two men who, by now, were at the top of the crater. She couldn’t see them anymore, but could hear Bodie yelling.
‘Go! Go! GO!’ she yelled, the movement making her eyesight pixilate. She gritted her teeth against the dizziness and stood. ‘I’m coming!’
‘She’s behind us,’ yelled Matt from somewhere in the distance. ‘Get in your buggy, Bo. Get the fuck in!’
Then, the ground rose up and her head struck a lump of metal debris protruding from the ground.
There was no more shouting. All was quiet and peaceful. Jenny opened her eyes and, in a sudden moment of realisation, she flipped to her side and looked to the top of the hill. With a sick feeling of dread, she rose and scrambled to the top of the crater. It felt like a mountain, and she slipped several times. Expecting to find Bodie and Matt dead; their bodies torn in frenzy under the clawed hands of the alien, she was relieved to find the men and the buggies were gone.
A glint of sunlight reflecting on something in the sky caught her eye. The buggies, now small space shuttles, were on their journey back to Taurus, as if being hauled back up by an invisible string.
Jenny climbed into her buggy. With shaking hands, she pressed the controls; nothing happened. She spoke into the transmitter, but remembered that Kate was malfunctioning.
Her buggy was immobilised.
‘Shit,’ she said. She pressed more buttons on the screen display. She pumped the accelerator, but nothing happened. She couldn’t even close the buggy up; instead, it remained open-topped.
She climbed back out, her hands in her hair as panic momentary claimed her.
‘It’s OK,’ she repeated to herself. ‘It’s OK. It’s OK. Breathe.’
Her forehead hurt; she touched it, expecting her fingers to come away bloody, but they were dry. A lump was beginning to protrude, though, and she suspected she had alien finger-marks around her throat.
She glanced around her. Might it be possible that the alien had gained access to one of the buggies and was inside Taurus? Kate was programmed to destroy an intruder immediately, but…
She closed her eyes briefly. She couldn’t think that way. She climbed back inside the buggy. She’d be OK. Bodie would realise she’d been left behind. He’d override Kate to get her buggy operational. She’d wait.
She looked upward at the now empty blue sky.
Won’t be long, she thought. Around her, all she could hear was the pounding of her heart. It was a lonely sound. She sat for a long time with her head tilted back, looking up at the vastness, the emptiness, of the sky.

Imprisoned for brutal crimes against his wardens, Fly became an unwilling experiment and was transported, with other criminals, to a hostile planet. Full of mutiny, anger and a desire for revenge the experiment was never going to be successful and Fly became the only survivor when the craft crashed.

Then the human ship arrived -- and Jenny.

Eden  book #1  Hunted  book #2

With a malfunctioning spacecraft she was in for a fight for her life, but her problems were only just beginning when her crewmates abandon her on Eden.

Jenny's on her own... or so she thinks.

Eden can be read as a stand-alone novel. Hunted is the follow-up to Eden and needs to be read in sequence.
